The Planets: Mars

Job type Test knit
Description

Mars is part of The Planets Collection - patterns inspired by the orchestral suite by Gustav Holst. The lace pattern was designed by Naomi Parkhurst using her system of encoding words into numbers, in this case the word Mars. A bold mosaic pattern contrasts with the large lace panels. The sample was knit with Pendragon DK from Avalon Springs Farm in colorways that evoke landscapes of Mars. The length and width are customizable and the pattern can be knit in any weight yarn from fingering to a light worsted.

Testers are welcome to use the yarn of their choice. The sample shawl was knit with two colors, but more could be used if desired. It is important to have a good contrast between the two colors used for the mosaic section. If your colors are too similar the pattern may be lost. I recommend knitting a swatch with a few garter stitch rows switching colors every two rows to see if you like the combination.

The sample shawl used approx. 435 yds of Color A (red) and 325 yds of Color B (grey). Testers are welcome to adjust the size of the shawl to their taste, but this may change yarn requirements.
