A Bobbled and Textured Beanie Design by Corrado Lark

The Backstory:

I designed this beanie during my dry period of designs. I’m actually kinda shocked I took notes while designing it last winter. I remember finishing this hat right after the weather turned warm, even though I started it at the beginning of the season. Honestly, it was that difficult to design or even knit for a while.

I went to the men’s knitting retreat this year, and it sparked my passion for the fiber arts again. I designed a shawl (New Sensations) in a month, my usual pace, and realized I’d been wearing this cute beanie and totally forgot if I had taken notes while I designed it. Thankfully, I had.

If you haven’t knit in Morehouse Farms wool, I’d highly recommend it. I hadn’t used much lace weight before this, other than in a mohair or suri alpaca blend that was mostly used to hold with other yarns. Doubling the lace makes for a really interesting gauge. Filled out, but loose enough to give a really perfect slouch to a hat. And I mean, knit mostly on US 7’s, it flies by. That is, if you aren’t working through other traumas and can actually focus on your knit.

I wanna knit this one again I think, maybe even follow my own pattern. I haven’t followed a pattern in years…would be kinda fun to see how that comes out!

Finished measurements
  • Hat Circumference, Designed with 2” (5cm) positive ease: 18.25” (20.5”, 22.75”, 25.25”, 27.5”) / 46.5 (52, 58, 64, 69.5) cm.

  • Length: Varies depending on how much ribbing you knit. The body and decreases are 5.5” (6”, 7”, 8”, 8”) / 14 (15, 18, 20, 20) cm as written. I knit 4” (10cm) of ribbing in the XL, so a 10” (25.5cm) long hat.

Gauge 14 stitches and 28 rounds per 4” (10cm) stockinette. Relatively weird I know, doubled lace on a loose gauge. A fingering weight and lace weight held together could substitute well.
