| Description | The Hokusai Vest is stranded colorwork vest depicting Katsushika Hokusai's 'Fine Wind Clear Morning'. A gradient yarn is used for the main color, reminiscent of the original woodblock print. Some important notes about yarn choice if you want to go with a gradient yarn (not required but looks great in it!): Sample (size 1) is shown using 2 full skeins of Schoppel Gradient (DK weight, 260m/284 yd per 100g skein) in Herbstsonne for the MC and Plymouth Superwash DK (119m/130 yd per 50g skein). A separate skein was used for the front and back panels. Note that there is variation in gradient start and stop points between skeins of Schoppel Gradient. I recommend choosing a gradient cake yarn that can be knit with a single skein (or 2 skeins knit double in fingering weight) for each of the front and back panels. Gradient cakes can also be alternated to further increase yardage. I would be conservative about ensuring enough yardage per skein in case your gauge varies or if you would like to extend the length. Some recommended options (all in fingering weight) include:

| Skills required | Flat knitting, increases, decreases, German short Rows, Italian bind off, stranded colorwork. |
| Construction type | Vest, knit top-down and flat, with underarms seamed at end |
| Required or recommended yarn | DK weight gradient yarn (or fingering held double); separate skeins for back and front (I recommend Fiber Optic Yarns, Bilum Yarns, and Wonderland Yarns); DK weight solid for contrast. Non-gradient yarn for main color also okay. |
| Yardage | 570-900 yds. This is roughly 285-450 yds per front and back panel, and I would add some wiggle room to avoid yarn chicken with the gradient cakes. |
| Tools required | This pattern uses 4.0mm (US 6) needles for the body and sleeves, and 3.75mm (US 5) needles for the hems. A tapestry needle is also needed for weaving in ends and seaming the underarms. |
